Course Overview
Teaching Critical Literacy in a Multimedia World
Learn how to create a lens of analysis to determine the message, the point of view, and the purpose of the media we consume. As the classroom teacher, our role is to help students inhabit the digital world as active, purposeful viewers and creators.
How will this facilitated, online course help you to create authentic learning experiences for your students that apply critical literacy skills in a multimedia world?
Module 1
Explore the digital media literacy skills that can be used in the classroom to engage and empower students.
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Apply the skills and habits of critical literacy to different media;
- 'Read’ media the way that we train students to read literature; and
- Identify how textual meaning is communicated through language, image and design.
Module 2
Investigate digital media literacy strategies that can be used to evaluate digital information texts and search results.
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Discover hidden/unstated points of view in searches and informational texts;
- Navigate between fact and opinion;
- Identify embedded clues that indicate bias/agenda/point of view; and
- Recognize how points of view can shape our understanding of what we believe to be true.
Module 3
Explore the use of critical lenses to evaluate news and news sources and identify how reading habits can shape news content.
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Use critical lenses to evaluate news and news sources; and
- Identify how ‘reading’ habits can shape news content
Module 4
Use the digital media literacy lenses to explore the way we ‘see’ and interact with social networks like Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. and explore the impact that these readings can have on the self-esteem, self-image and decision-making skills of readers.
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Identify and develop methods to help students ‘read’ the stories they see in social media;
- Help students analyze the ways in which social media platforms shape our behaviour (i.e., not the just way we use them, but the ways our behaviour is shaped by the apps/websites we use); and
- Identify ways that reading social networks can be used to enhance instruction.
Module 5
Explore the relationship between audience and author.
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Identify ways to help students analyze the relationship between audience and author;
- Identify and use tools to help students interpret and reflect on digital identities; and
- Identify strategies to help students make conscious choices in shaping their online identities.
Module 6
Explore how critical literacy can be used to support creators and consumers.
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Create digital media literacy lessons that help their students become active, engaged, creative readers of digital media;
- Understand the influence of interactions between readers and texts on textual meaning(s); and
- Know how to help students reflect on their digital media experiences.

How many hours per week should this course take to complete?
We estimate approximately 3-5 hours per week will be spent on coursework. The entire course will be facilitated over 8 weeks.
Can I work at my own pace?
To a certain extent, yes, although our facilitated course option has firm timeframes and deadlines. To gain the most benefit from the community aspect of a facilitated course you should aim to complete each module within its week timeframe.
If you would like to work at your own pace outside of the timeframes and deadlines for this facilitated course, you might consider purchasing our Self-Paced Option which is available outside of the facilitated online course dates.
How do I connect with other participants?
Each online course has it's own private community forum to connect with other partipants in the course. View our online course confidentiality policy.
We also encourage you to connect with us and fellow partipants outside the course through various social media channels (optional).
What happens if I’m not finished?
If you have not completed all of your course work by 1 December, 2019 you may continue at your own pace. However, you may receive little to no facilitator or fellow participant response beyond the course end date (1 December 2019) for any work you complete or add to the forums.
Being educators ourselves we understand and appreciate that sometimes our learning can be interupted by circumstances beyond our control. We may have a small window of flexibility with final course completion BUT it is important that you make contact with your facilitator asap if you are unable to meet the deadlines and timefames of this course otherwise you may not be able to claim your course completion certificate.
All Eduro Learning online courses offer *unlimited access so you will continue to have access to the course material, resources and tasks.
