What are people saying about Eduro Learnings Facilitated Online Courses?

5 Star Review

I loved the connection to people. The readings were appropriate and not arduous. The expectations for submitted work were realistic, but allowed for individuals tailoring it to their own needs.

Claude

5 Star Review

It was good to have resources that were text and video based. Overall I really enjoyed the course. The facilitator was encouraging and timely with her feedback. Hearing ideas and suggestions from others is a valuable bonus too.

Tracy

Course Overview

Coding and Design

Be introduced to several ways of thinking about complex problems and their solutions to the creation of an impact project that incorporates elements of design thinking and/or app design practices.

Learn basic coding and programming concepts through a combination of unplugged and computer based activities and participate in a design sprint to build skills and knowledge.

Walk away with a range of strategies and tools that you can use in different subject areas and with different grade levels to encourage your students to be creators and not just consumers of technology.

How will this facilitated, online course help you to encourage students to be creators and not just consumers of technology?

Module 1

Explore computational thinking as a fundamental way of approaching problem-solving.

Coding and Design Module 1

After completing this module you will be able to:

  • Understand the essential components of computational thinking;
  • Identify ways in which computational thinking can be applied in the classroom; and
  • Implement elements of lateral thinking in the classroom.

Module 2

Explore basic programming terms that are used across all coding languages.

Coding and Design Module 2

After completing this module you will be able to:

  • Identify and define key terms integral to coding and programming languages;
  • Understand how these terms can be applied to coding simple programs using a block-based programming language; and
  • Apply this knowledge and skill to classroom subject/grade.

Module 3

Explore the difference between remixing (starting with someone else’s content and changing/customizing it to create something new) and creating original content from scratch as well as the potential for remixing as a springboard for developing the skills of coding and design.

Coding and Design Module 3

After completing this module you will be able to:

  • Identify resources to use for remixing projects in the classroom;
  • Begin to develop the ability to read code to identify its function; and
  • Start adapting, customizing, and/or adding functionality to existing code projects.

Module 4

Examine the basic principles and practices of design thinking as practiced by Stanford University’s Design School and learn how design thinking can be applied to learning and creating in all subjects/grade levels.

Coding and Design Module 4

After completing this module you will be able to:

  • Identify and define key design thinking terms;
  • Understand the design thinking process and use it to design solutions; and
  • Apply the design thinking strategies to classroom activities/learning.

Module 5

Examine a variety of different apps and interfaces.

Coding and Design Module 5

After completing this module you will be able to:

  • Identify characteristics of good and bad app design;
  • View app design from a computational thinking perspective;
  • Storyboard an app concept; and
  • Understand ways in which the design process can be used in many other fields.

Module 6

Apply the skills and knowledge of design thinking and creative problem solving, app design and computational thinking to either connect the coding to the app using code.org’s App Studio or to create a project-based learning unit for students.

Coding and Design Module 6

After completing this module you will be able to:

  • Apply characteristics of good and bad app design to building a prototype OR to creating a project-based learning unit;
  • Use ways of thinking (i.e., computational thinking, lateral thinking, design thinking, creative thinking) to design an app or a PBL unit;
  • Use debugging routines to refine and revise your apps or lessons; and
  • Understand ways in which coding and design principles and processes can be applied to creating solutions to real-world problems.
